AI Voice Impersonation: Legal Steps When Someone Requests Money in Your Name

Yapay zeka ses dolandırıcılığı konulu temsili görsel

A relative receives a call asking urgently for money in a voice that sounds like yours. A familiar voice is not reliable proof of identity. In AI impersonation cases, preserve the payment trail and digital evidence together.

Verify the person through an independent channel

Before paying, call a previously known number or verify in person. A new number supplied by the caller is not an independent channel. Businesses should confirm urgent requests with the registered approver and use a second authorisation. A matching voice or video call is not sufficient by itself to establish identity.

Which evidence should be preserved?

Record the incoming number, time, messages, payment instruction and recipient account details. Keep any existing audio file unchanged rather than relying only on an edited extract. The legality of making a new recording depends on the circumstances. Preserve voice, video and messages for the authorities instead of publishing them online.

What if money has already been sent?

Notify the bank or payment institution promptly and ask about transaction status and any available recall or investigation process. Obtain a reference. A criminal complaint should distinguish the impersonated person from the payer, identify the communication channel and set out each transfer. Fraud, personal-data offences or other allegations depend on the actual facts.

Who may be responsible for the loss?

The offender’s liability and a bank or platform’s security duties are different questions. Bank reimbursement is not automatic; authentication, warnings, transaction design and fault require review. If you suspect a data leak supplied the voice sample, document that connection separately. JURIVEX can assess digital records, payment flows and potential remedies together.

How to organise your application file

Set out events chronologically and match each payment, instruction and reply to its record. Keep original files and capture screenshots with dates and URLs. Retain proof of delivery for written applications. If a statement changes, preserve the earlier version as well. Avoid publishing identity and account information on public channels.

Frequently asked question

Which records should I preserve after voice impersonation?

Keep the call date and number, messages, existing audio, payment request, transfer receipt and correspondence used to verify the person through another channel. Do not edit existing records or circulate them unnecessarily.
