I Am Being Blackmailed with Intimate Images: Preserving Evidence and Legal Protection

Dijital mahremiyeti ve şantaja karşı korunmayı temsil eden görsel.

Someone threatens to send intimate images to your family or publish them online. They may demand money, new images or some other act. Threats involving fabricated or AI-generated content can also require urgent attention even where the images are not genuine.

In brief: Preserve the threats and account information and do not send further images or access credentials. A criminal complaint, measures directed at published content and civil claims protecting personality rights are different legal routes. If there is an immediate physical danger, contact the emergency services on 112.

Will paying make the threat stop?

Payment does not guarantee that the images will be deleted or that further demands will not follow. Decisions made under pressure are understandable, but additional payments or content can increase the harm. Record who made the demand, through which account and what payment details were supplied.

Do not create additional legal risks by threatening the blackmailer in return or attempting to access other people’s accounts to identify them. Security and evidence-preservation steps should be guided by reliable channels rather than by the offender.

How can evidence be preserved without spreading the material?

Keep messages together with dates, usernames and accessible profile or message links. If material has been published, save the exact URL of each publication. A profile’s home page alone may not identify the specific content later.

Do not upload intimate material to public complaint sites. Material required for a legal application should be shared securely and only to the extent necessary. Where children are involved, avoid redistributing copies and notify competent authorities without delay.

Can action be taken before anything is published?

Yes. Threat or blackmail allegations do not require the content to have been published first. The demand, the pressure used and the surrounding communications are relevant. Messages, voice notes, payment details and previous communications can help establish the sequence.

The fact that an image was originally created or shared consensually does not amount to general consent for later threats or publication. Recording, obtaining, threatening and distributing material can involve separate conduct.

What if the material has already been published?

A formal removal report can be made to the platform. Depending on the circumstances, publications violating the privacy of private life may also be assessed under the specific procedure in Article 9/A of Law No. 5651. A platform report and a legal application are not substitutes for one another.

Not every reputational dispute falls within the privacy procedure. Civil protection of personality rights and claims for damages may also be relevant. Outdated online guidance should not be relied upon without checking whether the cited legal provision remains in force.

Information to include in your file

  • The account, telephone number and accessible links used by the person making the threat.
  • The exact money or conduct demanded.
  • The date of the first threat and the most recent communication.
  • Payment receipts or crypto transaction details, if any.
  • Separate URLs for any published material.
  • Platform reports and responses received.

State any security concerns and threats directed at relatives. Not knowing the offender’s real identity does not prevent an application based on the information you do have. If material is moved to new accounts, preserve the new links separately.

Frequently asked questions

What if the image is fake?

Threatening someone with fabricated material can still require legal assessment. Explain how the material was created or presented and how it was used to exert pressure.

If the content is removed, is the matter over?

Removal does not erase the fact of a completed threat or all consequences of the incident. Other remedies may still need to be assessed.

Should I deal with this entirely alone?

Support from a trusted person and professional advice can help when decisions are being made under pressure. Where a child or an immediate safety risk is involved, use the appropriate protection channels promptly.
